Transforming Our Primary Bedroom in Black & White

Transforming Our Primary Bedroom in Black & White

Our bedroom is finally finished, and it feels like we’re moving at a snail’s pace with our house. I can easily put an outfit together, but home decor just isn’t my forte. I’m doing it, and things are looking amazing, but it takes me ages to make decisions, and I can only manage one room at a time. I can multitask in everything but home decorating.

So, that’s partly why it’s taking so long, but I’m thrilled that our room is done. Now we can focus on our last room in the house. I might get sidetracked because I already want to replace some furniture, redo the dining area, finish the living room, and add things to my closet room. See how easily I get distracted?

Anyway, back to the bedroom! Let’s talk about it. We’ve always loved Danish decor and a black-and-white style, which we wanted throughout the house. But this time, we’re adding a lot more color. Our room, the second bathroom, and the kitchen stick to our black-and-white theme, but the rest of the house is more colorful with vintage art deco vibes.

I’d describe our home decor as Danish minimalism meets Miami in the ’80s. It sounds random, but it’s working. For the bedroom, I aimed for a calm space, which to me means minimal, cozy, and clutter-free. Plus, it needed to be gender-neutral. I wanted Zack to have a room where he looks forward to waking up. After dealing with Ruby and Howard wanting breakfast, the first thing he sees are skateboards, which is perfect, right?

As for Zack’s input on the house, it’s a mix of yes and no. He lets me have the final say but shares his thoughts on everything. If he really hates something, we won’t get it, unless I find a fantastic deal on OfferUp and see potential he doesn’t. In our bedroom, he chose which skateboards to hang, and his office is his vision with my help.

So, we’ve got his skateboards and my Prada. Add in the massive cozy bed and art deco cubes, and it’s a vibe. Here’s a rundown of everything we did and bought for the room:

**Our Black & White Gender Neutral Primary Bedroom**

**What We Did:**
– We painted the drab gray walls white and replaced all the floors. These changes made the room so much brighter.
– We moved a weird TV mount to the opposite wall. I didn’t like sleeping with my back to the door, but apparently, having a window above the bed isn’t Feng Shui either. Lesson learned.

**What We Bought:**
– **The Bed:** It’s amazing, right? Funny story, we got it for our dog Ruby, who has a back issue, so we opted for a low bed. It turned out to be a game-changer; we switched from a queen to a king, and it’s the best advice for couples: get a king bed.
– **Black Satin Pillowcases:** It’s 2020; if you’re not sleeping on satin pillowcases, you’re missing out. They’re better for your hair and always cool to the touch. Plus, these are in black satin, which I love.
– **White Duvet Cover:** With two dogs sleeping with us, we go through duvet covers quickly. This one is my favorite, super soft, and cozy with a zipper closure.
– **White Sheets:** I’m a sheet snob thanks to my mom, and these are my new love. They’re the perfect mix of cool, cozy, crispy, and soft.
– **Black Fur Blanket:** All beds need an extra blanket, in my opinion, and this black furry one is perfect.
– **Mongolian Fur Pillow:** It’s a beautiful pillow; I like having a couple of pillows, but not too many. I plan to replace this with something with a splash of color or animal print one day.
– **Mirrored Cube End Tables:** These have a vintage art deco feel that I love. They make the small space on either side of the bed look less cluttered.
– **Mid-Century Credenza:** It’s a beautiful piece, even though it got damaged during our move. Currently, it’s covered with a faux plant.
– **Crosley Record Player:** Zack and I had matching record collections when we met, and we’ve always had a record player at home.
– **Carhartt Book:** Pinterest inspired the open book styling, a trend in home decor. This book fits our gender-neutral theme perfectly.
– **Black Marble Bookends:** These bookends are so chic. Black marble is trendy, especially when paired with monochrome books.
– **Hanging Planter:** We needed some color, and a hanging plant seemed like a fun way to add it. We have a chic planter filled with a string of pearls plant. We replaced the rope with a heavy-duty gold chain for hanging.
– **Prada Poster:** Originally meant for my closet, it suits the bedroom perfectly with an arrow pointing to the skateboards.

**What’s Left to Do:**
– **Redo the Attached Bathroom:** I’ve changed the faucet hardware and cabinets, but it still needs wallpaper and new flooring.
– **Add Color-Changing Lights:** Maybe a light strip above the bed to create a relaxing night vibe.
– **Get a New TV:** Ours is ancient, but it works for now. It’s not a priority since we have other things to finish first.
