Pantone’s 2018 Hue of the Year: Ultra Violet Purple

Pantone's 2018 Hue of the Year: Ultra Violet Purple

Congratulations, Ultra Violet Purple! The Pantone 2018 Color of the Year is here, and surprisingly, I’m really into it. I’ve spent a long time disliking purple. Once, I had a friend, Allie, who absolutely couldn’t stand the color. She had such a strong reaction to it that I think her feelings rubbed off on me. But now, Pantone has declared it the color of the year, and suddenly, I’m all about purple. I’ve got my nails painted in UV purple, I’m wearing UV purple, and I’m picking up everything UV purple because I only have two pieces of purple clothing and I’m trying to wear them every day.

Pantone knows its stuff (remember when they nailed it with millennial pink in 2016?), so keep an eye out because purple, specifically ultra violet, is going to be huge.

Looking at the science behind purple, I’m even more on board with this choice. Purple has the strongest wavelength of electromagnetic energy and is tied to the cosmos, which is quite fascinating. It stands for magic, spirituality, creativity, compassion, inspiration, kindness, imagination, meditation, and intuition, and it’s generally seen as a calming color. It’s even said that purple can help with mental issues like anxiety, so I definitely need more purple in my life. Plus, purple is super fancy; it’s a royal thing.

Pantone explains their choice well. Ultra Violet is complex and contemplative, hinting at cosmic mysteries and the intrigue of the unknown. The vast night sky represents endless possibilities and inspires us to pursue a world beyond our own. Enigmatic purples have been linked to counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Icons like Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought Ultra Violet shades into western pop culture as expressions of individuality. This color symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, encouraging us to leave our unique mark on the world and explore creative paths.

Historically, Ultra Violet has had a mystical or spiritual essence. It’s associated with mindfulness practices, offering an escape from today’s overstimulating world. Purple lighting in meditation spaces helps energize and connect people.

So, are you on Team Purple or not? Apparently, it’s a color people either love or hate, so share your thoughts! If you love it, keep diving deeper into all things purple!
