I’m not the best traveler. Anxiety is always tagging along with me, and if there’s one thing that really brings it out, it’s travel. You’d think vacations mean relaxation, but for me, the pre-trip jitters hit hard. Once I arrive, I can enjoy myself, but the anxiety beforehand is next-level intense.
People often ask why I get so anxious before a cool trip, and honestly, what doesn’t make me anxious is a better question. I’m worried about leaving my dogs with the sitter, concerned about something happening to my house, nervous about either me or Zack getting sick while we’re away, anxious about the plane—just anxious about everything. I keep imagining the worst-case scenarios looping over and over in my head.
So, how do I handle it? I prepare—but at a normal pace. I don’t pack months ahead or wait until the last minute. Ideally, I’d pack as soon as I book my ticket, but that spikes my anxiety, as does last-minute packing. I usually start preparing logistics a week in advance and begin packing two days before the trip. My process is super streamlined.
Being organized is essential when managing anxiety, so since I’ve perfected my routine, I thought I’d share some of my go-to advice.
**5 Tips to Help You Prepare for Vacation**
1. **Organize Your Work Life**
I work from home, so this part is crucial since my work travels with me. I don’t want it to interfere with the fun, so I prepare to work remotely before I leave. The day before, I spend an hour at my desk in complete silence. I pay bills, notify anyone necessary about my trip, and set an away message on my email a day early so I have some downtime. During this time, I also charge all my devices.
2. **Pre-Trip Contact List**
I make all the necessary calls to banks and credit card companies to inform them of my travel dates. There’s nothing worse than your card getting denied abroad. I learned the hard way in Greece—it was a nightmare. I also check with my cell phone provider to manage data for the trip. I always max out on data, so don’t hesitate to get more than you think you’ll need to avoid hefty bills later.
3. **Secure Your Home**
Make sure your home doesn’t look vacant. Consider setting up automated lights, which you can find on Amazon. Ask a trusted neighbor or family member to keep an eye on your place and bring in your mail. Packages piling up invite trouble. Set up a hide-a-key for emergencies and inform someone you trust. If you have pets, find a reliable sitter and ensure they can care for your furry friends. Our sitter sends daily videos, which is incredibly reassuring.
4. **Clean, Clean, and Clean**
The day before departure, I bounce between packing and cleaning. Coming home to a clean house feels amazing; returning to a mess does not. I clean out the fridge, take out all the trash, vacuum, and wash the sheets. Fresh sheets after a trip are unbeatable. If short on time, hire someone to clean; it makes all the difference.
5. **Create a Packing List**
A packing list is a must. It helps ensure I don’t forget anything, one of my biggest stressors. I check my list repeatedly. You can create your own spreadsheet, or you could use mine. It’s comprehensive, but there’s space for weather-specific items too.
I’ve been using travel spreadsheets for years and am sharing them with you. They’re cute and functional, helping keep everything organized. Laminating them allows for reuse, and fine-tip whiteboard markers are key. One list is for packing and one for planning travel details, including activities you want to do.
Now, I’m signing off until I’m back from Jamaica. I usually keep up with the blog, but this time, I need a full break to soak up the sun. I’ll be active on Instagram, so follow along there. I’ll miss you but will return soon with awesome Jamaica content!
