A Fresh Transformation: Our Monochrome Primary Bedroom Revamp

A Fresh Transformation: Our Monochrome Primary Bedroom Revamp

Our bedroom is finally finished! It might seem like we’re taking our time with the house, and that’s because we are. While I can easily put together an outfit, home decor isn’t my strong suit. I can do it, and I think things are looking great, but I need a lot of guidance to make decisions and can only focus on one room at a time. Multitasking is my thing, except when it comes to decorating.

That’s partly why it’s taking so long, but I’m thrilled our room is done so we can move on to the third and final room in the house. Unless I get sidetracked by wanting to replace some furniture, redo the dining area, finish the living room, or add to my closet room. It’s easy for me to get distracted!

Back to the bedroom! We’ve always loved Danish decor and a black-and-white aesthetic, so we wanted to incorporate that into the house. However, this time we wanted more color. Our room, the second bathroom, and the kitchen stick to our signature black-and-white style, but the rest of the house has more color and vintage art deco vibes. I’d describe our home decor as Danish minimalism meets Miami in the ’80s. It’s a bit random, but it works.

For the bedroom, I wanted a calm space, which to me means clutter-free, minimal, cozy, and chill. It also needed to be gender-neutral. This was important because I’ve added a lot of pink, and I wanted Zack to have a space he enjoys waking up in. The first thing he sees in the morning, after Ruby and Howard wanting breakfast, are skateboards. Perfect, right?

Someone asked if Zack has a say in the decor. The answer is yes and no. He’s okay with me having the final say, but I always ask his opinion. If he hates something, we won’t get it, unless it’s a great deal and I see potential. For our room, he chose the skateboards, and his office is all his vision, though I’m helping to bring it together.

We’ve got skateboards for him and Prada for me. Add in the huge cozy bed and art deco-inspired cubes, and it’s a whole vibe. Here’s a breakdown of everything we did and bought for the room:

**Our Black & White Gender Neutral Primary Bedroom**

**What We Did:**

– We painted the drab gray walls white and changed the floors, which made a huge difference in brightening the room.
– We moved the TV mount to the opposite wall because I didn’t like sleeping with my back to the door, even though it’s not very Feng Shui to have a window over the bed.

**What We Bought:**

– **The Bed:** We got it for Ruby, our dog, because she has a back issue and needed a low bed. We ended up with a king bed, which is a game-changer for couples. It’s big, comfy, has side pockets for books or a taser, and USB chargers in the headboard.
– **Black Satin Pillowcases:** They’re better for your hair and always feel cool. I loved satin pillows as a kid, and these black ones are perfect.
– **White Duvet Cover:** With two dogs, we go through duvet covers quickly, but this one is my favorite. It’s soft, cozy, and has a zipper closure.
– **Great White Sheets:** I’m a sheet snob, and these are cool, cozy, crispy, and soft. I love them.
– **Black Fur Blanket:** Every bed needs a blanket at the end, and this one is a dream.
– **Mongolian Fur Pillow:** I like a couple of pillows, not a crowded bed. This one is pretty, but I plan to replace it with something with a bit of color or animal print.
– **Mirrored Cube End Tables:** They have a vintage art deco feel and help the space look less cluttered.
– **Mid-Century Credenza:** It’s a pretty piece, but I might replace it with something vintage. It got damaged in our move, so it’s covered with a faux plant.
– **Crosley Record Player:** Zack and I both had matching record collections when we met, so we always have a record player.
– **Carhartt Book:** Inspired by Pinterest, it’s part of the gender-neutral theme, and the page we opened is perfect for us.
– **Black Marble Bookends:** They’re chic and add a pop of edgy black marble.
– **Hanging Planter:** We needed some color, so we added a hanging plant with a gold chain.
– **Prada Poster:** It was meant for my closet room but works perfectly in our bedroom.

**What’s Left To Do:**

– Redo the attached bathroom. I’ve swapped out some hardware and painted the cabinets, but it needs more attention.
– Add a color-changing light feature, maybe above the bed.
– Get a new TV. Ours is old, but it works, so it’s not a priority right now.
