Mastering the 2024 Instagram Algorithm: A Pro’s Guide

Mastering the 2018 Instagram Algorithm: A Pro's Guide

Instagram’s algorithm is frustrating, constantly changing, and hard to understand. It only initially shows your posts to about 10% of your followers. If those 10% engage well, then it shows your post to the rest. This explains why some posts explode and others flop. While Instagram doesn’t reveal its secrets, here’s what I’ve learned from various sources:

To beat the algorithm, focus on genuine engagement. Respond to comments promptly—within the first hour if possible—and show appreciation even for simple likes. Ignoring comments hurts your visibility. Comment pods, while tempting, are now frowned upon and can get you penalized. Short, generic comments (like “nice pic!”) also don’t count as real engagement. The goal is authentic interaction.

Captions matter too. Forget simple emojis; write engaging captions to spark real conversations. Don’t edit your caption after posting within the first 24 hours as this may negatively impact your reach. Use highly specific hashtags (around 10 is better than 30 generic ones). Vary your hashtags and try including some directly in your caption, rather than just in a separate comment. Following relevant hashtags also helps.

Instagram Stories are also important. Respond to replies promptly, use locations and hashtags, and give shout-outs to other accounts. Engagement is key—the more you authentically interact, the better your visibility.

Ultimately, Instagram wants you to be a real person. Don’t just post and check your analytics; actively engage with others’ content. Comment genuinely—even on posts from accounts with many followers.

Authenticity is key. Share posts you genuinely believe in, give credit to brands and people you tag, and acknowledge when others share your content.

Finally, quality over quantity. Don’t post just to post. Focus on creating truly great content. The more excited you are about your post, the more likely it is to do well. Remember, engagement is the key to mastering Instagram’s algorithm.
